Hybrid bus

Just saw a brand new hybrid bus in Taipei on the 235 busline. Wondering if I’ll see more.

Supposedly Christmas is not a big deal here. Noone has off from work and school is in session, but there is a fair bit of acknowlegement of the holiday- and not just by the department stores and Western bakeries. Parents at Lucy/Leo’s school all seem to be preparing gifts and furthermore, apparently all the kids [...]

Taking the fast train to Hualien today. Not quite officially high speed, but it’s pretty direct so we’ll be there in two hours. Bought lunch boxes on the train for the kids. Food was actually pretty good and we got a kick out of eating “train” food.

These days, I probably take about 4 bus rides a day so I’ve gotten quite used it here.  It took a little while to get used to the bus lurching immediately after the last person boarded.  You learn quickly to grab a hold of something firm right away. But something that just drives me crazy [...]

BACK IN TAIPEI!

Errr… sorry about the lack of posts all summer.  I don’t have a laptop so my access to internet was dependent on borrowing computers.  Posting unfortunately fell by the wayside in a big way. Good news for Peter.  Flights to Shanghai from Taipei will now be truly direct.  No more flying through Hong Kong airspace before going to Shanghai. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/16/world/asia/16taiwan.html?ref=asia This week marked the first direct flights between Taiwan and the mainland since 1949 - just in time for Peter’s next trip to Shanghai which will be the first week [...]

Transportation in Taipei

Taipei has a subway, called the MRT.  The ads for it tout it as the highest ranked (most on time, various other standards) mass transit system in the world for N years running.  And I can believe it.  I am already annoyed if I arrive on the platform and have to wait 2 minutes for [...]
